do you feel like you’re a gym person?
You have not exercised in six months. You feel overweight. Your self-esteem is shot. You have pain in your knees, lower back, and shoulders. And to top it all off, you’re super busy. You may have no kids, several kids. Work a regular 8-hour day or work 12 hours per day.
When you see pictures of people in the gym on social media, they look happy and they look in shape. And you think to yourself, “I would never fit in with that crowd.”
Those are valid reasons to not want to start going to a gym.
However, none of them should keep you from getting to the gym. It’s important to realize that a vast majority of gym-goers do not carry eight tripods in their bags and spend most of the time in the gym flexing with their shirts off. Those are just the handful of people that post regularly on social media.
Why do you feel like you do not belong in a gym?
Most of our clients present with not knowing what to do even if they bought a membership at a gym. So they are looking for a little guidance or fine-tuning in their exercise regimen.
Coupled with a lack of direction, a lot of people do not like how they look, how they feel, or they are nervous about performing in front of others in the gym.
I’ve been doing this for 13 years now, and these are all very common and very understanding issues that people have before they sign up.
But it is important to remember that nobody was a gym person before they became a gym person. And I think it’s even more important to understand that once you start going to a gym, that does not mean it is going to take over your life.
You may know one person who spends three hours a day in the gym and cannot stop talking about their exercise regimen. Again, this does not have to be you. And most likely it shouldn’t be. However, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be training or comparing yourself to that individual who spends hours every single day in a gym. Because exercise is merely a tool for health, and how you use it is completely up to you.

Ask questions
The hardest part about joining a gym or convincing yourself to start personal training is just getting in the door. It takes a lot of courage to come in and sit down and talk to a complete stranger about your health, wants, and goals.
My father always told me that “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you need to change rooms.” So when I’m presented with a question that I am unable to answer, I seek advice from other professionals.
In this instance, setting up a consultation at a gym is a perfect start. Our facility has free consultations, and the only thing that it will cost you is 30 minutes of your time.
This is the perfect setting to go over your goals, prior exercise experience, and talk about how our gym conducts its first 100 days with each new member.
At JDFit, we know that everyone starts at different ability levels, has different goals, and we need to apply many different strategies and programming for each individual that we start with. The cool thing is you will always follow a program that was designed specifically for you.
In the end, we are all busy and have a lot of things that garner our attention outside of the gym, and that’s me included. Our goal is to show individuals that you do not need to spend crazy amounts of hours in the gym each week to reach your goals.
In fact, a few hours a week is all you need to get to where you want to be.
The last and most important thing that you should do is take action and get started!
