Should training be easy?

Should good training be on the easy side of the spectrum?

Allow me to explain:

  • A small chunk of your sessions are going to feel great and the weights are going to fly.
  • Another small chunk is going to feel like you are trying to lift a boulder off the ground.
  • A big chunk is going to be you coming into the gym, getting your reps in and leaving.

I would argue that people should leave the gym feeling as if they could have done a little bit more…and that is what a large chunk of your workouts should feel like!

Something to consider

Playing devils advocate, there is a time and place for specific styles of training. If you are in a weight training sport, you will have periods of time throughout the year where you would rather lay in traffic than workout.

These programs are not designed to be ran week in and week out. They are built for a specific purpose.

And this is not relatively new knowledge.

The crazy Russians figured this out back in the 60’s and 70’s.

A vast majority of your positive adaptations (gains) come from staying in that 75% to 85% of your one-rep max.

Even the bulk of professional lifter’s training sessions throughout the year stay within those percentage points.

To drive this point home further, our professional athletes at the gym are never crawling out of our facility. There is a time and place to press the gas and times to lay off a bit.

Easy training is Smart training

If you make workouts challenging but not soul crushing, you will allow your clients or yourself to be able to come back and train more frequently. All of those small nickel and dime injuries pop up much less and people still get stronger.

Win-win?

I think so!

In-Summary: Make sure the bulk of your workouts are in that large chunk of get in and get out of the gym. If you are disciplined enough, over time, those workouts are going to give you endless progress. If you redline every single workout, your body will simply give up sooner rather than later.
