How many times have you started something and never finished?
Or better yet…
How many times have you said you are just going to START and never actually start?
You, me and everyone that reads this does this to themselves.
Whether it is following a training program, dialing in your nutrition or simply starting a business, we all far short from time to time in regards to the commitments we made to ourselves.
Once upon a time, someone told me (I cannot remember who) that the best research is “me”search. The further I go into coaching/business, the more I rely on my own mess ups to help others. It is not the many years of schooling or the translated Russian training textbooks from the 70’s I read…it is far more simple than that…
I will lead off with a few simple questions:
- Who controls your attitude?
- Who controls what you eat?
- Who controls the amount of social media you consume?
The answer is….drumroll…
YOU!
Now…before you email me back and yell at me, I want you to know that I am not being judgmental. In fact, I know exactly how it feels to start and stop things.
Yes, there are other external factors at play: Family, kids, events and holidays…those things are real. But, outside of those obligations, there is plenty of time for healthy pursuits.
This may be harsh to hear and may even evoke anger. However, we need to accept the fact that we are in control of all the things that allow us to flourish.
How to stop this
You’re not perfect and I sure as heck am not perfect.
Perfectionism within itself causes self-sabotage.
We need things to go perfectly. We want perfection so badly that when something slightly goes sideways, we throw the baby out with the bath water.
I see this all the time.
Someone misses one meal out of the week and their entire existence crumbles. That missed meal turns into a whole day of bad eating which then turns into an entire week of bad eating. Eventually, you say to yourself…”ill start next month”.
Another example:
If you are a lifter who is on a 5-day split. Then…life happens. You will have to miss two training sessions. So…instead of taking what the week gives us, we decide that the other three training sessions are not worth doing.
Sound familiar?
I’ve been there many times myself…
To combat this, we have to lean into failure. It is a part of life. If you are not willing to fail, then winning is never an option.
Once we learn, that consistency instead of perfection wins, we will be far better off.
So…instead of turning that missed meal into a week long pizza binge, hop right back on the nutrition wagon and make sure you are finishing the week strong.
Instead of not training for a week because you have to miss a couple sessions, do your other three. Because that is called being consistent.
Will your progress be ruined?
Nope
Remember, failure is part of the process. It is how we learn and how we get better. Lean into it. You will be able to push yourself more and in the end…all the results that you have wanted will come sooner rather than later.
