Misinformation in the fitness industry that is holding you back

Things that I hear all the time

You spend enough time in any industry, you’re going to hear a lot of the same statements. In the fitness industry, this rings very true.

I spent the last 13 years of my life convincing people that they need to maintain their health inside and out side of the gym.

After years of reflecting on why people make certain claims, not only have I found them to be usually untrue, but interestingly enough, most individuals do not believe in what they are saying.

Then why say it?

It’s common human behavior for our brains to rationalize anything that is uncomfortable or things that they are not necessarily good at.

If we don’t want to do a certain activity, we will rationalize ourselves out of doing said activity

I encourage everyone to start some sort of fitness program and hold themselves accountable.

But we have to remember when going over goals and trying to figure out what we want out of our fitness journey that we cannot put an end date on this way of living. If this is done correctly, fitness is sustainable for the rest of your life. But everyone’s goals, wants, and time dedicated to the gym are different, and with that, each vision for what is going to make them happy varies as well.

For some individuals, losing 20 pounds will bring them that happiness. For others, it may be having more energy, walking up a flight of stairs without being winded, or simply being more active with their grandkids in the backyard. If this sounds like you, you have to ask yourself, “With each passing day, week, and month that I do not start taking control of my health, how soon will I get there?”. If you start tomorrow, you will get there quicker than if you start two months from now.

Below are some common statements that I hear that serve as mental roadblocks for people to get started living a healthier life:

I’m not really a workout person.

Let’s face it, life is busy, and the last thing on your mind is going to the gym. That’s okay, but you need to start at a less time-consuming level. Maintaining your health is important, and you may think to yourself, “One day I will get started.” But if it’s that important to you two months from now, it’s going to be important to you today.

Most of our adult clients do not show up to a consultation until their doctor tells them that they need to start getting healthier. To be honest, I have not met an individual who understands the importance of eating well and exercising regularly. The best course of action is to get ahead of the aging process and make exercise a priority now so you are not sitting in my office with your doctor saying you have to be there or you are not going to live much longer.

I do not like to exercise.

This can mean one of two things: Simply that exercise is not enjoyable, and we have plenty of people who do exercise and understand the health benefits of it, but it is still not their favorite activity. Or they had a bad experience with exercise in the past.

With the right environment and coaching, exercise can be enjoyable and something that you look forward to on a daily basis.

I can’t

Our demographic at the gym is varied, and that is what makes our facility awesome. If you were a fly on the wall at our gym, you would see professional athletes training alongside 80-year-old adults mixed in with middle schoolers.

You have to have a plan that is developed for you and your current ability levels. What you have to keep in mind is that is not where you are going to stay forever. The more consistent you are, the more advanced your exercises will become.

If you found yourself saying some of the aforementioned phrases in this post, hopefully you get a little bit of a giggle out of it. But I want this post to serve a very specific purpose:

  • You can do more than you think is possible
  • You should get started today
