For a lot of our athletes, they want to get to the next level. Whether that is from high school to college or from college to the professional ranks, everyone wants to level up.
The chances for the vast majority of athletes to play a sport in college is very slim…and that number decreases drastically if you’re trying to be a professional athlete.
So…what will get you there?
Genetics?
Sure…to a certain extent.
Where I am from?
Nope
I think the answer for a lot of athletes is far more simple than that…
Do the boring
Getting better in general is not some sort of esoteric quality that only a few possess.
You have to be able to deal with monotony.
You have to be able to do the same boring thing every day of every week for the entire year.
A vast majority of people give up after a few month of a pursuit because they are not where they want to be…Little do people know, that it takes years of consistency to reach your goals.
Another way to look at this is people get bored.
But boredom is not the root cause.
People don’t get bored playing videos games. That is because there is a short work to success play loop built in. You play a game, do a little “work” and ultimately, you get what you are after.
In more trivial pursuits, it is not that easy. That success path no longer becomes linear. It is a series of highs and lows and you may not feel like you’re getting any closer to your goal…
Eat, Sleep, Train
Every time I get asked by parents what their young athlete needs to do, my answer is always the same.
- Eat to the best of your abilities
- Follow a well structured weight training program by a professional
- Sleep as much as you can
- Get good grades
- Be a good person
If you cannot wake up early to make breakfast…the next level is not for you.
If you cannot shut the Xbox off and go to bed a littler earlier…the next level is not for you
If you cannot maintain a weekly presence in the gym…the next level is not for you
See a trend?
It is not the hard. There is not a secret supplement or morning routine that will come close to replacing the above actions.
The path you choose dictates your results
Every year, I get a handful of athletes that come into the gym and they all say the same exact thing:
“John, I wished I would have stayed in the gym and taken those things more serisouly”
Not exactly that every time but…you get what I am saying.
The problem is when people see our more accomplished athletes outside of the gym, they want that exact same thing for themselves.
The problem is…they are looking at where that particular athlete is at and not where they came from.
For a lot of our kids they have been training weekly for years and years. They started with bodyweight, dowels and a slow tempo. They eventually graduated to a more “sophisticated” style of programming due to the years they have put in…and in return, they have reaped the rewards of their efforts.
In Closing…
My advice will remain the same…
- Get to a training facility where someone knows how to program you correctly. Yes…it costs money but…I promise seeking out a professional strength coach will not only expediate your progress, it will keep you safe and keep you on the field longer.
- Eat whole foods. Or…stop going into the gas station and grabbing an energy drink and chips. Without nutrition, your weight room efforts will mean nothing.
- Sleep. Stop staying up till 2 am playing video games.
Remember, if you want to be exceptional, you have to do exceptional things.
It doesn’t matter if your friends don’t do it or others think it is silly…there is a reason people stay average.
