Don’t be afraid to say “i dont know”

Here is what I have learned after 13 years…

The more I figure stuff out, the more it feels like I have no clue.

There are times throughout my day when someone asks me a question and my response is generally: “It depends” or “I don’t know”.

It is pretty crazy to see the expression on an individuals face when you tell them you have no clue!

We have lost the art of simply saying…”I do not know”.

However, there are things that coaches DO NEED to know:

  1. Basic muscle groups and joint actions
  2. How to work around pain and alter programs accordingly
  3. Being present in during a session.

We cannot expect people to know everything.

  1. The variable relationship in scapular humeral rhythm
  2. Pros and cons of French Contrast training in adolescence
  3. What is the atomic number of Beryllium?

Chances are if you do not know the answer to a question, you know someone who does.

I am very fortunate to have a network of professionals who put up with me asking questions!

Clients will find your authenticity refreshing and at the end of the day, you have to take the approach of being a life long learner. If you are presented with a topic that you know very little about, now is your opportunity to learn something new.

Truth be told, I have never lost a client because I did not know everything off the top of my head.

This philosophy does not end during sessions. It can be extended to when people are looking for specific training.

I have had people come in over the years looking for coaching. More specifically, either in bodybuilding or in Crossfit. I am familiar with both modalities but my lane is firmly in adult fitness/strength and conditioning. So…instead of trying to retain and give a less than stellar product, I refer to others in the community that know that arena better than me.

Did I lose a client on paper?

Sure.

But, when they are asked about coaching in the area, our name will come up in conversation.
