Semi-private training is a relatively new concept in the gym industry. Back in the day when I first started coaching, it was primarily in a one-on-one format. As time grew, people wanted to train with others. More importantly, people still wanted to be coached in this environment.
What is semi-Private Training
There are two ways to look at “group” training.
- One program that is to be ran by a large group. In this setting you will have 10 or more clients that you are responsible for. Think of Crossfit, Bootcamps or a University weight room.
- Individual programs in a smaller group. Think 2 to 5 people per group but they are at varying ability levels and need different things.
At our facility, we firmly sit at number 2.
We still want people to receive coaching but we still want to satisfy the individualistic nature of our clients, goals, ability level and movement issues.
Is it safe?
In the strength and conditioning field, an athlete’s best ability is their availability. This goes for our adults as well. Safety never takes a day off and if we cant keep people safe, then it does not matter how many letters you have after your name!
In a semi-private setting, the ratio of coach to client is still pretty good. It is just the right amount of people so the coach is able to give that individual attention without feeling overwhelmed.
We strive for autonomy with our clients as well. You may be in a group setting but you will work at your own pace, pick out the weights you will use and record everything on your program. All the while…you will have a coach there when you need them!
Remember, the military trains people to throw grenades in groups…so exercise should be ok…

Staying accountable
When people work out in a semi-private setting, it is hard to not become motivated. You are around like minded people after the same goal…which is important inside and outside of the gym.
Every week at our facility, we see that friendly competition amongst our clients. It is healthy and everyone needs to be pushed. Of course, we make sure we reiterate one of our mantras…we don’t compare ourselves to others, we simply want to progress!
We want to be good every day instead of perfect once in a while!
Community Building
One of the best things about my job is the awesome people that make up my facility’s community.
They are all awesome!
They come from various backgrounds, have different interest and hobbies.
A lot of our clients hang out with each other outside of the gym and try to make their appointments around the same time as others.
Semi-private is the best of both worlds. You get the community, competition, accountability and lastly, the best coaching around!
Do you need friends like I do? You can make them here at the gym!
