Assisted Strength Training

Unilateral lower body training has been around for a long time. I did not come close to popularizing it, but I sure do love it when it comes to programming our athletes. More specifically, at times, we want to have our athletes support themselves with their hands when performing certain exercises. This not only increases stability but it increases the load potential of that exercise.

Truthfully, I stole most of this stuff from Mike Boyle. When I first started training athletes, we back squatted often. More times than not, we would have sore lower backs and not a lot of quality reps. We needed to volume down on the spinal loading but still be able to load for effectiveness.

The tricky part is, single leg exercises are stability dependent. That means external loading is limited until we reach a requisite level of strength.

How can we load an exercises effectively without the worry of falling over all the time?

Simple…hang on to something when you perform these exercises.
