The Absolute Worst Trend in Fitness…

I get a lot of emails and drop-ins with questions regarding weight loss and the best way to do it. My usual conversation with these individuals consists of proper eating habits, formulating a weight training routine and a plan for consistency. What my discussions never consist of are short cuts, useless supplementation and how to lose your weight as quickly as possible so you can somehow feel better about yourself….

The weight loss challenge that different companies promote as a cash grab is something that I have been against for some time. It promotes unhealthy weight loss with little to no education on how to eat properly for the long term. Weight loss tends to go up after these challenges are completed because there has been a time limit put on their habits (along with a host of physiological implications…). These challenges are simply not built for the long term… Couple this with unnecessary supplementation recommendations and you have the basic MLM starter kit…

All you have to do is put down some money, buy their products and make damn sure you tell everyone that they are the ones that facilitated your remarkable progress…

How to Win?

That’s right! I am going to tell you how to win this dumb game!

  • Do not eat…anything. If you eat then you will gain weight and lose. Remember, the goal is to win the 10 weeks…not sustain healthy habits the rest of your life.
  • Do nothing but cardio. DO NOT lift weights. They will make you bulky and lean muscle mass is not what we are after…
  • Make sure you take as many sketchy diuretics as possible. You want to get all of the water out of your body and keep it that way. Before you weigh in, double the dosage and do not drink any water the day before. If you want the good stuff, check your grandmother’s medicine cabinet…
  • Make sure you “cleanse” and “detox” once or twice per week to rid your body of the evil voodoo that inhabits it…

Just Kidding!

Please do not do any of the things that I have stated in the above paragraph. However, the talking points above are the impetus for many conversations at the gym…

People are killing themselves with the hopes of losing as much weight as possible and in the shortest amount of time as possible. We want to establish healthy habits year round. Not when a company is offering a challenge…

These challenges teach people that the scale is what determines your success. The more and more the number goes down, the better you are doing. This approach perpetuates this quick fix mentality that plagues the fitness industry. We need to promote muscle gain…this is what helps keep the fat off and you in shape…

The companies that offer these “challenges” push certain products on their contestants. Either some sort of stimulant or diuretic that is neither tested nor has any third party study that shows its effectiveness…

The Truth

The truth is…creating change in yourself and others is very tough. Changing years worth of bad habits does not happen over night and it certainly does not happen when you give someone 10 dollars to accept a challenge.

Body composition change and the scale do not go hand in hand. Progress does not go in a straight line either. It is full of ups and downs because that is life! Nothing is perfect and we have to be able to deal with the good and the bad when it comes to weight loss…This includes not quitting just because you had a “bad” week!

However, there are companies out there that promote challenges and have a great educational backing. These companies strive to teach individuals what it means to eat correctly and make it a life long venture. Renaissance Periodization is one of these companies and they continue to grow their well earned reputation in the field!

Next time you partake in a challenge, if one of the prerequisites is to buy a whole host of their supplements…ask why and how they are going to facilitate my fat loss. Lastly, ask if you need them…if they tell you that you cannot achieve your goal without a product…enter a different challenge.
